The R. W. Kern Center at Hampshire College is a fully sustainable, net-zero building, and a “living building.” (built by Wright Builders) LBC certification is the highest honor that a building of its kind can receive. Requirements of the LBC are divided into seven sections, or Petals: Materials, Beauty, Water, Place, Energy, Health & Happiness, and Equity. The Kern Center had to fulfill the requirements of each of these 7 Petals in order to be officially certified.

This machine is split into 7 different sections (one for each Petal), each section containing tricks that convey the requirements of that Petal. For example, the dump truck in the Materials section represents the fact that all the construction materials were locally sourced, and the solar panels in the Energy section represent the fact that the building is entirely powered by solar energy.

Enjoy.
